The ultimate safari country

Geography

Tanzania is one of Africa’s best-known safari destinations, not least because of its many national parks. It has a population of around 36 million, but the country covers an area the size of France, Germany and Benelux combined, leaving plenty of room for a huge variety of flora and fauna. The northern part of Tanzania is particularly well known for places such as Lake Manyara, Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater.

Parks

Ngorongoro crater, with its unique habitat, is a designated World Heritage Site. There’s a lake in the middle of the crater which attracts many different forms of wildlife. Serengeti National Park is perhaps the most famous nature reserve in the world, with more than three million animals. The word ‘Serengeti’ comes from the Maasai word ‘Siringit’, meaning an infinite open horizon. The Serengeti is home to a large population of lions.

Capital city

Tanzania’s capital city, contrary to what many people think, is Dodoma rather than Dar es Salaam. Arusha, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, is Tanzania’s third city and a base for many safaris.
